Islamabad: In a significant move to strengthen parliamentary relations between Pakistan and the United States, Deputy Chairman Senate Syedal Khan Nasir will lead a high-level Senate delegation to Washington from January 20 to 25. The visit is being described as a historic milestone in Pakistan–US parliamentary engagement and marks the beginning of a new institutional chapter in transatlantic relations.

The visit is being organised under the auspices of the Pakistan Policy Institute and, for the first time, will formally include the United States–Pakistan Inter-Parliamentary Group (IPG). This development is being viewed as a major achievement in non-traditional parliamentary diplomacy and reflects a shared commitment to strengthening democratic institutions through direct legislative engagement.

According to officials, the initiative comes at a critical juncture of global and regional transformation, particularly in South Asia and the Middle East, where parliamentary institutions are increasingly recognised as key actors in promoting dialogue, stability, and democratic governance. The delegation aims to deepen legislative cooperation and foster mutual understanding between the two countries beyond conventional executive-level diplomacy.

The visit has clearly defined strategic objectives, including the establishment of a permanent institutional mechanism for sustained inter-parliamentary dialogue between the US Congress and the Senate of Pakistan. The delegation will focus on promoting democratic values, exchanging best legislative practices, enhancing parliamentary oversight, and strengthening institutional cooperation.

In addition to meetings with members of the US Congress, the delegation will engage with the Pakistani-American community to present Pakistan’s parliamentary perspective on regional and global issues. The agenda also includes discussions on scientific, cultural, and policy-oriented cooperation, reflecting a broader approach to bilateral engagement.

This visit holds historic significance, as in the 77-year history of Pakistan–US relations, no previous Pakistani parliamentary delegation has held formal engagements inside the Rayburn House Office Building under the auspices of the US Congress. The programme will also include a press conference and media interactions at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., as well as community and policy receptions in New Jersey.

Officials believe the visit will lay the foundation for regular parliamentary exchanges, enhanced legislative collaboration, and a sustainable institutional partnership between Pakistan and the United States. The initiative is expected to strengthen bilateral relations anchored in mutual respect, democratic principles, and long-term strategic engagement.
