The Revival of Japan–Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship League

The Japan–Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship League was formally revived at an inaugural meeting held in Tokyo on 21 November 2025. Pakistan’s Ambassador-designate to Japan, Mr. Abdul Hameed, attended the session on the special invitation of Mr. Seiji Maehara, Member House of Representatives and Chairman of the League.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Maehara welcomed the restoration of the platform and noted the positive direction of Japan–Pakistan relations in recent years. He recalled his participation in Pakistan’s National Day celebration at the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025, describing it as a reflection of Japan’s continued interest in strengthening diplomatic and cultural engagement with Pakistan.

Ambassador Abdul Hameed expressed satisfaction at the league’s revival, calling it an important step in reinforcing parliamentary diplomacy between the two countries. He underlined that Pakistan and Japan share a long-standing relationship rooted in peace, development cooperation, and mutual commitment to economic progress. He noted that Japan has remained one of Pakistan’s most reliable development partners for decades, supporting projects in infrastructure, energy, disaster management, and human resource development.

The Ambassador highlighted that the bilateral partnership is guided by six institutional mechanisms, including foreign ministerial consultations, security dialogues, economic policy dialogues, and joint committees on trade, investment, science, and technology. The revival of the parliamentary friendship league, he said, would help further strengthen these channels by promoting dialogue at the legislative level.

He also emphasized the role of parliamentary diplomacy in expanding cooperation in new areas such as climate resilience, renewable energy, technology exchange, skill development, and people-to-people linkages. Both sides agreed that enhanced interaction among lawmakers would contribute to deeper political understanding and support long-term cooperation.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to widen the scope of bilateral relations and explore new opportunities for collaboration. With the revival of the parliamentary league, both countries aim to inject fresh momentum into their diplomatic engagement and reinforce a partnership built on shared values and development goals.
